Country House Kitchen & Interior Design Project | West Sussex

Set within its own remarkable country estate, this large family house has a generosity of scale and character that guided every stage of our design. We worked closely with the family to reimagine the principal kitchen, dining and sitting areas, and also undertook interior design and sourcing for the drawing room and entrance hall.

A Kitchen for Family Life and Generous Entertaining

The original kitchen footprint was significantly increased to create a large, light-filled space that now brings together cooking, dining and relaxed living. Designed for a busy household with children, frequent guests and regular entertaining, the room needed to offer extensive storage, generous preparation surfaces and a layout that could move easily between family life and hosting.

Two dedicated sink zones support this flexibility: one overlooking the gardens, the other integrated within a coffee and drinks area facing the courtyard. Each provides its own preparation and clean-up space, with integrated dishwashers and tailored cabinetry.

Considered Storage & Architectural Flow

Storage plays a central role in the design. Two larders sit strategically within the main cooking zone — one beside the Aga for ingredients and daily use, the other serving broader food preparation needs. The vaulted ceiling, with its substantial oak beams, lends the room architectural presence, while limestone flooring and curved oak thresholds subtly define the transitions between the kitchen, dining and sitting areas.

A Centrepiece Island Shaped for Purpose

The kitchen is anchored by a large, beautifully proportioned island in oak, designed as both a practical workstation and a place for people to gather. It accommodates two ovens, warming drawers, crockery and cutlery storage, and deep drawers for pans and utensils. A sweeping curved breakfast bar forms one side of the island, with comfortable seating for six. The surfaces throughout are Platinum Macaubas quartzite, chosen for its soft movement and timeless quality.

Honouring the House’s Heritage

Behind the principal kitchen, we retained the original scullery, preserving a sense of the home’s history while ensuring the new space meets the needs of modern family life. The resulting rooms feel connected, functional and deeply rooted in the character of this exceptional period property.
