Bespoke Handcrafted | Arts & Crafts Kitchen | Surrey
This bespoke kitchen was designed for an Arts & Crafts house in Surrey, set within large gardens and surrounding woodland. From the outset it was intended to sit at the centre of the house as natural a place for everyday living as for cooking and gathering.
Handling Scale Without Losing Connection
The scale of the space needed careful handling. Too little structure and the room risked feeling unresolved; too much division and the connection to the garden would have been lost. The design responds by introducing movement through the room rather than dividing it into zones.
A Curved Island at the Centre
A curved island sits at the heart of the space, guiding circulation naturally and softening the overall geometry. It creates a focal point without closing the room down, allowing views and movement to continue through towards the garden beyond. The drawers within the island were made to follow the curve precisely detail that supports the way the space works rather than drawing attention to itself.
The cooking area is arranged around an Aga, anchoring one side of the room and giving it a sense of permanence. A breakfast bar beneath a Piracema granite surface provides a quieter place for informal use and everyday moments.
Materials Chosen for the Long Term
The cabinetry was designed specifically for the space, with each element considered in relation to the architecture of the room. Materials were chosen for their warmth and for how they will sit together over time a kitchen that will continue to feel part of the house rather than something added to it.
