Bespoke Home Bar, Gym & Bathroom
Converted Stables | Surrey
What was once a row of old stables has been reimagined as a series of contemporary entertaining and leisure spaces — a handmade bar, gym, mezzanine snug and bathroom, designed to feel immersive and personal from the moment you arrive.
Going Out Without Leaving Home
The clients wanted the experience of going out while remaining at home — spaces that would feel atmospheric in the evenings while carrying the same sense of permanence and craftsmanship as the wider property. The design responds to that brief with warmth, texture and carefully layered detail throughout.
A Curved Bar at the Heart of the Room
At the centre of the scheme sits a large curved bar, handmade in Iroko timber with Brazilian granite surfaces, finished with handmade Turkish leaf-shaped tiles and copper detailing that introduce warmth and reflection throughout the room. The softly curved outer edge encourages movement naturally while creating a more intimate atmosphere within the larger space.
Original stable posts were retained and incorporated directly into the design, maintaining a connection to the history of the buildings while grounding the more contemporary interventions within the existing structure.
Craft in Every Detail
Behind the bar, integrated cabinetry conceals refrigeration, a dishwasher, ice machine and storage keeping the practical elements of entertaining quietly within the design. Above, a bespoke copper gantry with hand-finished finials provides hanging storage for glassware, drinks and trailing greenery, a detail developed closely with the clients to bring softness and life into the space.
Music formed an important part of the brief, and dedicated space was integrated for vinyl storage and record decks shaping the atmosphere of the room as meaningfully as the physical design itself.
Gym, Snug & Bathroom
The adjoining gym follows the same architectural language and material palette, linked through large glazed Crittall-style doors that maintain a visual connection between the spaces. Above, a mezzanine snug provides a quieter retreat overlooking the room below.
The contemporary bathroom continues the same spirit through bold use of colour, handmade cabinetry, textured tiles and carefully layered materials playful, considered and closely rooted in the character of the original Surrey stable buildings.
