Contemporary Kitchen Design, Rural Sussex
The brief for this renowned architect and his wife was to create a beautiful, understated design for a large kitchen and dining space with wonderful proportions. The garden and land surrounding this house bring foxes with their cubs and deer right up to the kitchen windows. Light pours in from double doors on both sides and the space now is big enough to seat twelve, yet it still feels cosy enough when just occupied by two.
The compact cooking space is shielded by a generous kitchen island which can seat people on the far side. This area provides a place from where everything from drinks, elegant canapés or a hearty country breakfast can be enjoyed. Everything is within reach and friends can feel involved but don’t encroach on the preparation area.
Other design features are details such as the walnut trim around the cooker hood and the splashback behind the Aga but the best part of the design is the way it flows and brings the gardens and views right into the kitchen in a seamless way. Linking the inside to outside is further enhanced by a sophisticated, yet natural colour palette, where cooking apple green combines with the gentle pewter handles to create a ‘wow’ factor but without shouting.
