Putting sustainable choices at the heart of our work

Many of the properties we work on are hundreds of years old. Back then, things were built to last! Our view is we don’t see why that should change…. For us, a big part of sustainability is about making sure everything we do is built to withstand whatever family life throws at it and designed to suit your lives and your homes so well that you’ll still love using it decades later.

That ‘built to last’ ethos means we care deeply about both the impact and the quality of the furniture we create for our clients – because both play their part in sustainability. We combine high quality design with exceptional quality materials to create furniture that has longevity. That longevity aids sustainability, moving us far, far away from the throwaway society that has become so distressingly prevalent in recent years.

Furniture that’s hand-made by local craftsmen

Those values start with how and where your furniture is made. Your furniture will never have been built overseas and shipped in. It will have been built in a local workshop and then installed in your home by local craftsmen who have worked with us for decades. Their skill delivers timeless, elegant furniture that will outlast any trend. We want to be sure every element looks as beautiful and performs as well throughout its long lifetime as it does on the day it is fitted.

We build bespoke so we never build unnecessarily

Our values continue through to the way we work. For example a Figura kitchen or library is designed to suit your room, your house and your family and is built for you and you alone. That means we keep wastage to an absolute minimum because we only ever build exactly what we need for a project – you’ll find no storage warehouses full of base cabinets here. Even the very limited amount of timber waste we create is repurposed and turned into pellets to use for heating the workshop.

Helping clients make sustainable choices for living

Over the course of a project we help clients make hundreds of choices about everything from design through to appliances and efficiency. We always try to guide clients to think about how they might want to live more sustainably and how the decisions they make can help them to do so more easily.

Partnering with organisations who share our ethos

Many clients also want to consider the environmental impact of the different types of products we might use on their project. As a result we very carefully choose suppliers who share our ethos. For example all the wood we use comes from sustainable forestry programmes. Meanwhile the company we work with for surfaces has had their products, business practice, processes and supply base evaluated by The Sustainability Hub to assess their sustainability risks and opportunities.

Working to keep our ‘behind the scenes’ operations sustainable too

Every little bit counts when it comes to increasing our sustainability. So our office is largely paperless, we keep heat and light usage to a minimum, we produce as little office waste as possible and recycle everything with can, including our print cartridges. We keep our ‘commutes’ short and, wherever possible, make sure our installation teams share transport to sites.

We even carry that ethos through to our promotion where we do minimal, thoughtful marketing, again using suppliers that share our concerns. Our latest brochure is a case in point, it’s carbon-balanced and printed on FSC accredited paper, using vegan inks by a printer that runs all their presses using power from their own solar panels!
