We were introduced to Jenny Barton's Ceramics at a recent photoshoot. Her unique and hand-crafted pots, bowls, plates and jugs were perfectly at home in the surroundings of a beautiful Figura kitchen. Jenny makes her individual ceramics at Enigma Pottery Studio, Frome, Somerset.
The secluded walk down the walled cottage garden path to the studio, it is easy to forget Enigma Pottery is in the market town of Frome. Bluebells just over, it is good to see vine and fig leaves spreading a canopy, perfect for decorating ceramic ware. In a world of mass-production, it is often the hand-made little touches which add accent and interest. This is Jenny's walk to work.
The pottery and ceramics are all made by hand, from throwing a pot to glazing, and it is this which really shows through in each piece. Sometimes it is just the delicate gradient of a pot, or the flourish of a hand-modelled handle, or sometimes it is the application of glaze. It can take years of working in clay to achieve that easy medium between creativity and craft.
Jenny came to clay later in life than some, opening Enigma Pottery Studio and Gallery in Frome with a degree in Ceramic Design after graduating from Bath Spa University in 2001. She has never looked back.
The first half of 2016 has been busy, just how she likes it. Enigma Pottery has many people come for classes; one-off tuition sessions, taster days, and she also take commissions and have a shop in the front of the house to stock. It is amazing to see what people come up with and the fun we can have creating and realising projects. Some keep it simple while others have complete flights of fancy.
Jenny prefers her own work to be beautifully simple, reflecting the balance between form and function. Often using just one colour, to decorate, she believes it is this balance which is in harmony with its surroundings. It is something most people find easily recognisable. To create something as functional as a bowl or plate, and yet have for it to have a resonance of the bespoke and simple is something she treasures and hopes to share with people for many years to come.
